BELTRAN HAD HIS FEET up on the counter and read the sports page in the newspaper. Masters left to find them some coffee. He glanced up every so often at the monitor that looked in the kitchen window, but just saw the family eating breakfast. He wished Masters would get back here. Beltran wanted sleep more than coffee. It had been a long night.

The phone rang and he reached over his shoulder to pick it up. “Yeah?”

“Is anything going on this morning?” he heard Fitch say over the line.

“Not really. The Lake family is having breakfast,” Beltran answered. He saw the son put his hand in his dad’s and then the wife. The screen fuzzed out. It did this on and off all morning. “I think they’re saying prayers right now.”

“You think?”

“Yeah, the screen keeps scrambling. Of note, Fitch, we may need to bring in a long-range camera. The one outside on the deck isn’t focusing clearly and whenever these people touch, we lose the picture. If we use long-range, maybe they won’t affect it so much.”

“I’ll think about it. Have you put in any of the mics?” Fitch asked.

“Ah, no, the family’s there,” he answered and wondered just how bright Fitch really was. The independent network seemed to think him brilliant.

“Yes, I understand,” Fitch hissed through the phone. “Let me know when you’re able to do it.”

“Yes, sir.” Beltran closed his eyes. He felt sick of dealing with people like Fitch. Watching men like him ruin so many people’s lives made him want to puke. The man had no scruples, but then neither did Beltran. He thought he might be having a midlife crisis. After this round was over he needed to head down to the whorehouse in Nevada. That would boost his energy. He realized Fitch recited the usual litany in his ear and he only grunted back.

“Bel, let me know when you get those mics set up. I’ll want to monitor them myself,” Fitch said.

The back door of the van opened and Masters stepped in carrying a tray. He saw Beltran on the phone and kept quiet.

“Yes, sir, we’ll let you know.” He snapped the phone closed and looked at Masters. “Fitch has got to be the biggest fucking asshole on the planet. What a jerk,” he growled.

“What did he want?” Masters handed him a coffee.

“Wanted to know if we’d set up the mics yet. He’s going to monitor them himself,” Beltran smirked.

“How are we supposed to install the mics with the family at home?” Masters sat down.

“That was my question. Fitch acts like we’re being stupid and not thinking. Man, I hate that guy.” Beltran looked at his screen. “Hey, where did they go? They were just sitting there saying prayers or something.” He looked at the empty kitchen table.

As he stood up, he saw Mrs. Lake walk into the kitchen. She came alone, which made him wonder where her husband went. “We’ve got to get that backyard area covered. God only knows what they’ve been up to,” Beltran mumbled and thought he was too tired for all this.
